
Retrieval Practice Isn’t Just for Math: Using Low-Stakes Recall to Build Reading Comprehension

When we talk about retrieval practice, the conversation often turns to rapid recall with multiplication facts, spelling words, or state capital lists. Flashcards and quick-fire quizzes are common practices in math classrooms, whereas reading comprehension is often treated more as a set of higher-order thinking skills to practice through discussion, reading responses, or open-ended analysis.
However, cognitive science shows that low-stakes retrieval actually can help students build the mental models that allow them to tackle complex texts. Reading comprehension relies heavily on what a reader can actively retain and retrieve from memory. When readers face challenges understanding complex texts, the breakdown of comprehension often stems from overloaded working memory, rather than a lack of critical thinking ability. Bringing low-stakes retrieval practice into reading instruction can help students build durable mental models that support deep comprehension.
The Science of Memory and Reading
Reading requires holding a lot of information in your head all at once. As a student reads a new text, they must keep track of earlier plot points, remember meanings of key vocabulary words, and bring forward all they already know about the topic. Imagine a second grader, reading the first book in Mary Pope Osborne’s popular Magic Treehouse Series, Dinosaurs Before Dark. As the main characters, Jack and Annie, explore the Cretaceous period, they’ll need to remember that pointing to a picture in a book triggers the magic tree house, keep track of where Annie ran off to, and recall that a Pteranodon is a large flying dinosaur. If the reader forgets how the tree house works or struggles to recall a key vocabulary word, their working memory gets jammed. When working memory gets overloaded, deeper comprehension breaks down.
Research supports the role of active recall in building reading comprehension. In a landmark study, Jeffrey Karpicke and Janell Blunt compared the effectiveness of retrieval practice against elaborative studying techniques like concept mapping. College students who practiced retrieving text information achieved significantly higher comprehension scores than those who drew concept maps or re-read the material, even when tested on complex inference questions (Karpicke & Blunt, 2011). More recently, this advantage has been confirmed directly in elementary classrooms: a 2025 study of 5th graders working with real history texts found that testing themselves on the material outperformed simply re-reading it for supporting learning and text comprehension (Franzoi et al., 2025). Together, these studies suggest that the benefits of retrieval practice, first documented with adult learners, extend to the elementary classroom and to real instructional materials, not just laboratory word lists.
Similarly, research synthesized by Pooja K. Agarwal and colleagues demonstrates that low-stakes retrieval practice increases long-term retention across grade levels and subject areas (Agarwal et al., 2021). In the context of reading, recall strengthens the mental representations of a text. This aligns with the language comprehension strands of Hollis Scarborough’s Reading Rope (Scarborough, 2001). When students quickly recall background knowledge and text details, they free up the cognitive capacity needed to draw inferences and evaluate themes.
Low-Stakes Retrieval vs. Assessment
Effective retrieval practice is different from traditional assessment in a small but vitally important way. For retrieval practice to work it must be low-stakes. This means it must be taught as a routine for retrieval designed to strengthen memory, rather than used as an evaluation.
In primary grade classrooms, retrieval work can be brief and verbal. After reading aloud a portion of text you might ask students to tell a partner three specific things that happened in the text (this is especially important practice when reading a text over multiple days). You might use picture cards to help students remember the who, what, and where of what they’ve just read, or provide visual scaffolds to help students remember a key topic and details from an informational text.
With older students, retrieval practice will likely transition to a quick written exercise. For example students might quickly jot a quick outline of yesterday’s chapter before reading on in their books or they might quickly sketch a character relationship map, identifying key relationships in a novel. You could also pair students for a one minute oral summary or ask them to jot down two key vocabulary terms from the previous lesson and explain them to a neighbor.
Three Low-Prep Classroom Strategies
These low-stakes retrieval routines require minimal preparation and fit easily into existing reading units.
1. The Pause-and-Recall
Pause mid-read during a shared text or read-aloud. Ask students to cover the text or turn their books face down. Give them 60 seconds to identify the main subject or character(s) and name(s), write or draw three key events or details from the passage they just read. Have them flip the page back over to check their work immediately.
2. Flash Vocabulary Recall
Instead of matching vocabulary words to definitions on a worksheet, start a lesson by displaying three target words from previous chapters. Give students 90 seconds to say or write a single sentence for each word based on how it was used in the story, then review the correct meanings as a class.
3. Retrieve to Predict
Before asking students to predict what will happen next in a story, require them to retrieve two specific facts from earlier chapters that support their prediction. This grounds their forward-thinking analysis directly in evidence recalled from memory.
Addressing Common Concerns
As educators, we may sometimes worry that focusing on recall could reduce reading instruction to basic memorization. Yet, it’s important to remember that direct recall of literal details provides the essential foundation for higher-level analysis. Students cannot analyze a character's implicit motives if they cannot recall that character's recent actions and interactions.
Another common concern involves student errors. If a student retrieves incorrect information, immediate feedback prevents that error from taking root in memory. Keeping these activities quick and providing immediate feedback ensures that mistakes remain useful feedback and incorrect recollections don’t compromise students comprehension.
Reading comprehension and memory operate together. By replacing passive re-reading with short, low-stakes, purposeful recall exercises, educators can help students retain what they read and build deeper understanding over time.
