Course Overview

This course equips educators with evidence-based routines and a dynamic toolkit for teaching phonemic awareness, letter recognition, and handwriting to our youngest learners. Through developmentally appropriate, multi-sensory strategies, you'll design engaging experiences that build the cognitive bridges necessary for reading and writing—and create a classroom where emerging readers and writers fall in love with literacy.

Learning Objectives

  • Phonemic Awareness Routines: Implement daily routines and activities that help students hear and play with language before and alongside print.

  • Multi-Sensory Letter Instruction: Build a toolkit of strategies for teaching letter recognition, formation, and handwriting as a fluid bridge into early reading and writing.

  • Literacy Through Purposeful Play: Create materials and environments that invite students to approximate reading and writing during choice time and center-based play.

  • Reflective Community Practice: Collaborate with peers to assess student development and refine differentiated support across the literacy continuum.

Upon completion of the course participants will receive a certificate of participation; and NY State educators are eligible to receive CTLE credits.
