Course Overview:
This course equips participants with evidence-based strategies to lead grammar and conventions instruction that bridges foundational developmental needs with primary-grade standards. Participants will analyze student writing samples and assessment data to identify emerging patterns, allowing for the design of highly responsive lessons. The course emphasizes practical classroom applications such as leveraging oral language and purposeful talk as a bridge to written conventions while also providing methods for using mentor texts to maintain an engaging instructional environment.
Learning Objectives and Outcomes
Diagnostic Assessment: Analyze student writing to identify developmental patterns in early mechanics and usage, using this data to form flexible small groups for targeted support.
Oral to Written Transition: Create engaging instruction that uses oral rehearsal and collaborative talk to help students bridge the gap between spoken language and the functional application of conventions.
Mentor Text Inquiry: Implement strategies for using high-quality picture books and student-facing mentor texts to model foundational sentence structures and standard conventions.
Structures and Organization: Develop practical record-keeping tools and progress-monitoring systems to track the consistent application of grammar and convention skills in daily student work.
