The course emphasizes practical classroom applications, teaching grammar within the context of authentic writing, while providing methods for using mentor texts to maintain an engaging and meaningful instructional environment.
Learning Objectives and Outcomes
Diagnostic Assessment: Analyze student writing to identify specific patterns in syntax and conventions, using this data to form flexible small groups for targeted intervention.
Responsive Instruction: Create developmentally appropriate lessons that bridge the gap between isolated grammar rules and the functional application of editing skills in authentic writing.
Mentor Texts: Implement strategies for using professional and student-facing mentor texts to model sophisticated sentence structures and conventional accuracy.
Structures and Organization: Develop comprehensive record-keeping tools and progress-monitoring systems to track the transfer of grammar and convention skills into daily student work.
